What are we about?

At Stoccata Macarthur we train anyone with a keen interest in fencing and self improvement.
We cater for anyone from experienced martial artists and those who might want to compete, to those who just want to turn up, swing a sword and have some fun.
No gear or previous experience required but if you have any, even better!

Which Historical Sources do we focus on?

  1. Our base is the Anglo-French tradition of the small sword taking inspiration from the styles of Sir William Hope, Domenico Angelo, and John MacArthur. These sources range from the late 1600s to the late 1700s. At Stoccata Macarthur, we treat the smallsword as the ultimate cross training tool and consider its fundamentals to be applicable across any fencing system, with a particularly strong relationship to our one handed cut and thrust weapons.

  2. Related to our base in smallsword is our chosen cut and thrust sword system written by Englishman Charles Roworth in the late 1700s, with subsequent editions being published in the 1800s. This military based system covers pretty much any one handed sword of the period. It covers broadsword, spadroon, sabre, hanger, and cutlass.

  3. In addition to the Roworth system, we also offer fundamentals in the broadsword-specific style of Andrew Lonnergan from 1771. Lonnergan offers techniques from the “old style” of Scottish broadsword as opposed to Roworth’s later, and more streamlined military style.

  4. Finally, we train the longsword in the late Medieval and early Renaissance German tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer (circa 15th Century). The longsword is a two-handed and double-edged weapon wielded by the knights of old, having evolved as a versatile and capable battlefield sidearm as well as a symbol of nobility. The longsword was later enjoyed by the middle classes as a sporting weapon throughout the Renaissance, and many artworks showing that fencing schools of the time continued to feature the longsword.
